SPORT & STATIC KITE FLYING – MODEL GLIDER FLYING
The steady breezes on the summit of Mt Howard make it ideal for Kite Flying and mode gliders. Many glider enthusiasts visit Mt Howard from time to time, including a large model glider club from Germany. The area on the south side of the summit is an area where there is limited potential for damage to the natural fauna due to the gravel type surface in the area. This area can accommodate several kite enthusiasts.
Tubing is currently an ongoing activity for individuals and groups in the meadow above the upper terminal. At this time, the guests would walk back and forth from the bottom to the meadow.
Wallowa Lake Tramway is in conversation with the USFS to obtain authorization to improve this current activity to include grooming of tubing lanes of the meadow.
The Tramway offers uplifting of skiers/snowboarders to the summit of Mt Howard for a variety on snow activities which include:
Skiing/snowboarding in the high peaks surrounding the back side of Mt Howard, a very popular activity especially in the late spring and summer months.
During the winter months, skiing and snowmobile enthusiasts use the east side of Mt Howard, and WLT will occasionally tow skiers up the slopes on the east side of the mountain.
X-Country Skiing/Snowshoeing activity is very popular along the summer hiking trails on Mt Howard, and often WLT will groom and set track for the X-country enthusiasts.
Paragliding/Hang Gliding activities are an established activity on Mt Howard with an improved launch site on the north side of the summit of Mt Howard.
